Planners’ Picks — April 30, 2024

Planners’ Picks  A collection of resources from CSN planning committee members worth mentioning

April ends and we look for May flowers in the future—we tend to our gardens, both in the yard and in our minds and teams: pulling weeds that choke out the beauty, fertilizing with nourishment, and admiring the growth. Who knows; maybe you’ll attract some butterflies!

*Note: Don’t fret if you can’t get through these resources! If you’re short on time, choose one or two that are of interest to you.

If you spend your time chasing butterflies, they'll fly away. But if you spend your time making a beautiful garden, the butterflies will come.
Don't chase, attract.

How Leaders Can Move Teams From Isolated to All-In

In this episode of the HR Leaders Podcast, Christopher Rainey is joined by Steven Van Cohen, MS, a Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author and Partner at SyncLX. Steven brings valuable insights from his extensive experience as a leadership consultant, particularly in the context of creating cohesive teams and addressing workplace loneliness.

Steven points out a concerning statistic:

  • 69% of employees feel socially disconnected at work, impacting both productivity and mental health.

This challenge is further intensified in remote work environments, highlighting the need for a shift from traditional leadership models to ones that focus on emotional intelligence and empathetic engagement.

To address this, Steven suggests strategies like ‘Boosters and Blockers’, personal appreciation notes, and ‘Crush’ sessions for peer recognition.

The Formula for the Perfect Leader

Americans want leaders who are “trustworthy” above all else, according to a joint 2023 survey by U.S. News & World Report and The Harris Poll. It’s a seemingly universal result across a range of demographic breakdowns, including by gender, race, generation, household income, political party, urbanicity and geography.

“Honest” and “hard-working” followed trust as the most important leadership traits in the overall results. But unlike the top trait, cohorts of respondents debated whether they preferred truthful leaders over industrious ones who roll up their sleeves.

The findings come from a survey of more than 4,000 American adults that asked respondents to assess a set of 30 different leadership traits, selecting which ones they considered the “most important” and “least important” to being a successful, modern leader.
