How do you appreciate and recognize your staff?

CSN presented a session this week on recognition and appreciation practices for managers. We discussed some strategies and methods of recognizing staff, above and beyond their paycheck. Some topics covered:
• Intrinsic motivation – autonomy, mastery, and purpose
• Flexible schedules and work/life balance
• Happiness at work contributing to performance, fulfillment, and success
• How environments with strong recognition programs are twice as likely to
produce effective workers as places with weak efforts
• Access to professional development is crucial for employees (and easy at the UW)
• Involving staff with important decisions / recruitments / etc. is great for buy-in to the mission
• Cookouts and community building events are also important to connect with staff
